Parent Movie Review

Christy (Sydney Sweeney) is navigating her family’s lack of acceptance for her true self when she makes it big as a professional boxer. Even then, she doesn’t feel free: it becomes clear that she must sacrifice parts of who she is if she wants to hold on to her long-sought success. Her trainer, Jim (Ben Foster), who later becomes her husband, manages her career as it progresses. However, over time, their relationship unravels under his worsening abuse, pushing Christy into increasingly dangerous situations both inside and outside the ring.

At first glance, Christy appears to be a classic boxing movie with the unique element of a female fighter. However, as the story unfolds, the boxing becomes a backdrop for the narrative’s true driving force and theme: domestic violence. The movie offers a chilling portrayal of how abuse develops gradually, showing that physical violence is often only aspect of an abuser’s spectrum of control. While far darker than I expected, this is an important and impactful film that tackles issues such as homophobia, misogyny, and domestic violence with raw honesty. Though heavier than your typical sports drama, Christy is ultimately more powerful and inspiring because of it.

Despite its many strengths, the film isn’t without flaws. It is excessively long, and several predictable victory montages could have been condensed or interwoven throughout the movie to better highlight the contrast between Christy’s public triumphs and private suffering. The pacing also causes the beginning and end to feel disconnected, which seems clumsy in a high budget production. Still, the film’s depiction of violence outside the ring is generally handled with intention and restraint, avoiding gratuitousness while maintaining its emotional impact. I also appreciated how it portrayed the people in Christy’s life who tried to help, while thoughtfully showing the complex reasons she didn’t accept it. The film powerfully illustrates the nuances of abuse and how what happens behind closed doors can shape the way someone moves through the world when those doors are open.

Thanks to the violent content, profanity, and drug use, I can't recommend this film for children of any age and even advise viewer discretion among adults. Nonetheless, Christy is a generally well done and compelling film that touches on important aspects of domestic violence that are often left out of the conversation.
