Parent Movie Review

A tragic accident leaves nine-year-old John O’Leary (Joel Courtney) with burns on almost 100% of his body. Despite a less than one per cent chance of survival, John perseveres and fights for his life.

John’s story soon comes to the attention of baseball announcer Jack Buck (William H. Macy), who, along with a supportive community, rallies around John as he endures the painful recovery process, learning to walk again and live life without fingers. Although John survives, he’s left with both visible and invisible scars that cause him to doubt his self-worth and ability to be loved. This leads to excessive drinking and attempts to distract others from his past. One night, he meets Beth (Masey McLain), who helps him slowly rediscover his worth.

Finding success with a construction business, John is surprised when he’s asked to speak to a group of young girls about his childhood experience. Terrified of public speaking, he reluctantly agrees. From there, word of his story spreads, and John begins sharing it with more audiences, eventually turning it into a business that inspires others. Along the way, he realizes that many of his inner wounds remain unhealed and that he must lean on his faith and family to keep moving forward.

Putting my thoughts about this film into words is difficult for several reasons. Despite the often cringey dialogue, cheesy production, and stiff performances, I found myself deeply emotionally invested. One moment, I was rolling my eyes at the acting, and the next I was sobbing because the story felt so authentic and heartfelt. Knowing it’s based on a true story made it hit even harder.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the film’s deft handling of its faith-based themes. It managed to be sincere without feeling overly preachy or condescending. While there were a few heavy-handed metaphors we’ve seen countless times in Christian films, Soul on Fire remains accessible to anyone, regardless of their beliefs (as long as you can tolerate a fair amount of cheesiness and bad acting). Ultimately, this film delivers a touching message about resilience and making the most of the cards you’ve been dealt. At times, I worried it might drift too far into a “be grateful for your trauma” narrative, but it mostly avoids that pitfall and instead offers a grounded, heartfelt story about healing, hope, and perseverance.
