Parent Movie Review

Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), the formidable editor of Runway, is in hot water. The magazine recently published an article praising a fashion house, only to have it revealed that the company uses sweatshop labor. The scandal is swirling, readership is dropping, and Runway desperately needs to regain its credibility in the media world. Determined to save the magazine, the publisher (Tibor Feldman) makes a call.

It’s been twenty years since Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) worked as Miranda’s put-upon second assistant. She’s achieved her dream and has traveled the world as an investigative reporter, developing a solid reputation for research and storytelling. On the very night when Andy receives an award for her reportage, she and her colleagues are fired. By text. Andy needs to find a new job as quickly as possible, so when she’s asked to become features editor at Runway, she jumps at the chance to beef up the magazine’s print content. Can Andy survive Miranda’s abusive management style a second time around? And can the two women work together to save the magazine?

Fans of the first film will get their money’s worth from The Devil Wears Prada 2. This isn’t a serious film – there are no deep messages (aside from some nods to compassion, second chances, and friendship) – but it’s a candy-coated confection packed full of crazy fashion, celebrity cameos, and laugh out loud moments. It’s a great choice for a girls’ night out or, when it streams online, a quiet night in with a favorite carb.

It’s almost impossible for a movie to fail when it has this dream cast. Meryl Streep dominates this film, just as she did the original, giving us a Miranda who is as ruthless as ever, while also making her human and even momentarily vulnerable. Anne Hathaway is endearingly awkward, and Stanley Tucci is suave and calm, grounding Runway and the film. There’s also plenty of fun to be had with Emily Blunt, who resurfaces as Dior’s representative, doing her best to leverage the company’s position as a major advertiser to extort concessions from the magazine. She’s blunt (no pun intended), brittle, and as funny as ever.

Luckily, the movie’s comedy isn’t marred by excessive negative content. There’s virtually no violence or sex, and just a little bit of social drinking. Profanity clocks in at under two dozen curse words, with two sexual expletives, thirteen terms of deity, and a handful of minor swear words. Frankly, my biggest beef with the film is the aggressive product placement – Christian Dior, Diet Coke, and Meyer soap all receive prominent screen time.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 isn’t perfect, but not all movies need to be flawless works of art. This flick is an enjoyable piece of fluff and it made me laugh out loud repeatedly. That’s good enough for today.
