The Rip Parent Guide
A skillfully crafted thriller, The Rip drowns under a tsunami of profanity.
Parent Movie Review
After the murder of Miami Police Department Captain Jackie Velez (Lina Esco), her Tactical Narcotics Team comes under intense scrutiny amid growing rumours of a corrupt officer operating within the unit. Tensions escalate when Velez’s second-in-command, Dane (Matt Damon), receives a tip that leads the team to the home of a woman named Desi (Sasha Calle). There, they uncover millions of dollars in illicit cash, an unexpected discovery that immediately raises troubling questions and sets off a chain reaction within the group.
The find begins to fracture the once-unified team (including members played by Ben Affleck, Teyana Taylor, and Steven Yeun), as suspicion mounts and trust steadily unravels. Moral lines blur, and the film ultimately poses the compelling question: what would each of us be willing to do when faced with the temptation of so much wealth?
The Rip is a gripping crime thriller that strikes a strong balance between plot, action, heart, and suspense. While it is neither family-friendly (due to non-stop profanity and plentiful violence) nor particularly ground-breaking, it is a tense, well-paced film that keeps viewers entertained and guessing right through to its final moments. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck both deliver strong performances, bringing welcome depth and layered character work to a film that is otherwise heavy on action. For viewers who don’t mind excessive profanity and a generous amount of gunfire, this makes for a decent movie-night pick (just be sure the kids are well and truly in bed first).
Directed by Joe Carnahan. Starring Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Teyana Taylor, Steven Yeun. Running time: 133 minutes. Theatrical release January 16, 2026. Updated January 20, 2026
